“Most of us live in cities, so the quality of our urban environment is an issue of daily concern,” said Stavros Dimas, Commissioner for the Environment.
“European environmental legislation is already delivering cleaner air, improved wastewater treatment and many other benefits. We are now looking to see how we can best exploit the positive links between those laws and how best to support local authorities in their efforts to improve the urban environment.”
At present many of the environmental impacts of cities are dealt with separately – such as poor air pollution, noise, heavy traffic, and waste – but more could be achieved by promoting integrated approaches.
The consultation asks questions concerning the importance people attach to living in a high quality environment and what measures respondents are prepared to take to improve the quality and performance of their own city.
