Youth council gives green light to recycling lessons

Aluminium recycling company Novelis has now completed the website, Think Cans which aims to encourage responsible recycling by linking the subject to key areas of the National Curriculum including science, geography, design technology and citizenship.

It uses online games, video presentations and activity sheets to bring recycling alive.

The website has been trialled at 20 Merseyside schools and on Friday, May 26 children elected to serve on Liverpool’s Schools Parliament by their classmates voted to endorse teaching recycling as part of mainstream lessons.

Novelis Recycling marketing manager Diana Caldwell said: “Every aspect of Think Cans has been developed with the aim of supporting the National Curriculum.

“Not only will pupils be making vital progress in their studies by using these interactive resources, they will also be developing a greater understanding of the importance of recycling.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to address the Liverpool Schools Parliament.

“These bright young people have been elected by their peers, so to hear them endorsing the project in this way is very rewarding, and gives us all hope for the future.

“The children were disappointed to learn that Liverpool is one of the poorest performing areas in the UK for recycling, so we see their enthusiasm for Think Cans as a very positive step towards changing this situation for the better.”
