Cornish town launches major regeneration scheme

A new regeneration scheme in Camborne, Cornwall, is to transform the derelict site of a former equipment factory into an eco-housing development.

The brownfield regeneration scheme will deliver 390 new homes to the area, and should also bring 250 news jobs through the offices and commercial spaces planned for the development.

It forms part of a larger Government drive to regenerate the former mining town, which was once a centre of Cornwall’s centre for the tin and copper mining industry, and the site of the housing development housed a thriving business manufacturing industrial equipment.

Migration into the Cornwall area has led to housing shortages, which the local ‘Urban Regeneration Company,’ CPR Regeneration, is hoping to fill through urban redevelopment schemes such as this one. Many projects are likely to be sited on greenfield land, however, due to limited availability of brownfield land.

An ongoing public consultation will decide the future of the area encompassing the Cornish towns of Kerrier, Pool and Redruth as well as Camborne.

The housing and offices to be built on the CompAir site will use green building techniques, with high energy and resource efficiency standards in the buildings and planned improvements to transport infrastructure such as rail links.

CPR Regeneration signed a contract with Midas Homes, the developer to carry out the work, this week.

Steve Jackson, English Partnerships’ senior regeneration manager, said: “I am delighted we have exchanged contracts with Midas Homes and that they are now confirmed as our development partner. Midas shares English Partnerships’ commitment to high quality and understand that the scheme needs to set the highest standards of design and sustainability.”

“Since the CompAir business closed its doors, we have worked hard with our public sector partners and local people to create a plan for the site that will transform the area and create local opportunities for new homes and jobs. Bringing the private sector on board now will ensure that the project is delivered and I look forward to working with the Midas team.”
