Australians are ready to recycle but refuse to ditch their cars in favour of public transport, according to research carried out by the country’s Bureau of Statistics.

A wide ranging survey looking at the habits of Australian households and their environmental impact showed that while 99% of people claimed to be engaged in recycling, 90% of homes also kept their own car and most chose their vehicle on the basis of cost, not environmental factors.

Only 14% of Australians said they used public transport, with the most common reasons for not doing so being inconvenience and the fact people had their own cars.

The full results of the survey can be found on the ABS website.
