Philadelphia’s Swarthmore College has become the latest American academic institution to stop selling Coca-Cola on its campus, in protest over what its students see as the shortcomings of the drinks company’s environmental and human rights record.

Citing allegations of complicity in anti-union violence in Colombia and irresponsible use of water in India, the college has told the Coca-Cola company it will not be buying any more of its products until it permits an independent investigation into the alleged CSR lapses.

Swarthmore joins a growing number of colleges in the USA banning the soft drinks company. Other include the universities of New York and Michigan.

Coca Cola has always refuted the allegations of wrong doing in the developing world and has even set up its own website in India to explain its side of the story.
