A redundant British assault ship which played a role in the campaign to retake the Falkland Islands is to be recycled in the UK.
The12,000 tonne HMS Intrepid has been moored in Portsmouth Harbour since leaving service in 1999.
The Ministry of Defence has now announced that Leavesley International has been selected as the preferred bidder for the tender of recycling the ship and must now seek the necessary licences before being granted the contract.
Recycling the ship in the UK will avoid the legal wrangles that dogged the French government when it tried to send its aircraft carrier the Clemenceau to India to be scrapped (related story).
