A wave of eco-awareness can be expected across America on Sunday when the 38th annual Earth Day gets underway.

Initiated on 22 April 1970 by US senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day sees grass roots activities like beach clean-ups and tree-planting principally in the US but also internationally.

Londoners will participate with an electronics equipment recycling event on Clarendon, and a River Thames clean-up two days ahead of Earth Day on Friday 20th.
