Irish companies attended a conference yesterday (November 23rd) where they shared ideas about how the green agenda is impacting on the retail sector and its suppliers.

Alyson Stephen, senior marketing advisor at Enterprise Ireland, commented: “Green and ethical consumerism is high on the agenda in UK retailing at the moment.

“Consumers are increasingly demanding products that are ethically sourced and produced from suppliers who make positive efforts to reduce their impact on the environment.

“While ‘green products’ are considered niche at the moment, before too long, it will become the norm for the market in general so it is critical that Irish companies prepare now.”

At the seminar businesses also learned about current and future trends in the green market and how they could act to reduce their carbon footprint.

One of the speakers, Chris Hines, former sustainability director of the Eden Project in the UK, added: “There is no alternative for any company in the 21st century, either they embrace the green sector and build it into their business plans as a core value or they risk the future viability of their company.”
