Recent reports have noted that light pollution in the sky in Ireland has increased dramatically over the past decade, with badly designed street lighting and population growth being the main factors.

This makes it harder for people to see the night sky and is also symptomatic of the increased reliance on polluting fossil fuels that generate the power for lighting.

Three lectures at the expo were concluded by “Light Pollution”, which was given by Albert White of the Irish Light Pollution Awareness Campaign (ILPAC), the Irish part of the International Dark Sky Association.

The group says: “As Ireland’s carbon emissions continue to grow we face massive environmental fines. Reducing light pollution is a simple and effective way of reducing our energy usage and reducing our lighting costs.”

Businesses in Ireland should remember to always turn their office lights off in rooms that are not being used. Not only will this reduce carbon emissions and cut down on light pollution, but it will also save money.
