Big Green Challenge for Northern Ireland groups

Not-for profit groups and organisations in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to find innovative ways to tackle climate change as part of the Big Green Challenge.

Run by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA), the Big Green Challenge will run for two years and those taking part will have the chance to win a share of £1 million.

Groups must come up with ideas that are either brand new, or new ways of applying existing solutions. The most imaginative and workable approach at the end will win most of the £1 million prize pot.

“We’ve had a massive response already to the launch, proving that people are actively looking for ways to pool their ideas and resources to make a bigger impact on climate change,” NESTA chief executive Jonathan Kestenbaum told the Belfast Telegraph.

“At this stage we really want to inspire groups in Northern Ireland about what’s possible and the regional event in Belfast will be a great chance to do this.”

NESTA is working on the Big Green Challenge with social entrepreneurship group UnLtd, whose mission is to “reach out and unleash the energies of people who can transform the world in which they live”.

As green issues take centre stage in the media, businesses in Ireland are making eco-friendly changes such as switching to green energy suppliers and using greener modes of transport.
