Ryan was speaking at the ‘Thinking Green: Economic Strategy for the 21st Century’ conference in Dublin, which was also attended by former US Vice-President and climate change guru Al Gore.
“The programme of government has set our emissions reduction target at four per cent below 1990 levels,” he said, All About Energy reports. “We must live up to this. I intend that we will smash through these targets but we need to start regulating and investing now.”
He said that Ireland would also meet its renewable energy targets, adding: “It will mean massive involvement in the grid system. It will involve massive investment by private industry. There is no reason why Ireland cannot rise to this challenge.”
Minister Ryan’s comments come at a time when environmental business best practice is being taken more seriously than ever before.
Al Gore, whose climate change documentary film An Inconvenient Truth won an Oscar and helped him win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, said that Ireland’s business model had a “key role to play” in driving forward the global environmental agenda.
