The International Builders Show is currently taking place in Florida and many of the key speakers at the event are set to focus their talks on how the green construction sector is rapidly expanding, the Oakland Business Review reported.

Calli Schmidt, from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), revealed to the paper that the organisation would be launching national green building standards and a green builder designation, and that these represent “what seems to be the future of home building”.

According to the paper, Bob Jones, vice president of the NAHB, told delegates: “Green building is at a tipping point.

“Our members build more than 80% of the homes in this country, so this growing interest will result in a sea change for residential construction.”

He added that the green building marketplace is expected to grow from being worth $2bn in 2005 to about $60bn by 2010.

Recently, ministers in Ireland published new guidelines to make sure that new construction in the country was carried out in the most sustainable manner possible.
