Strabane Magistrates Court heard that environmental crime officers from the Environment and Heritage Service had visited a site last year and found large amounts of controlled waste, consisting of rubble and general builder’s waste mixed with clay and soil near the Mourne River.

Edward McCrea, of Melmount Road, Strabane, pleaded guilty to two offences and was fined a total of £5,000. He was also ordered to pay court costs.

In a separate case, Brian Fox, of Omagh, was fined £1,000 at Omagh Magistrates Court, after officers visited a site on Drumnakilly Road and found 75,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste.

Mr Fox pleaded guilty and was fined £500 on each of two counts, and ordered to pay court costs.

Both offences related to breaches of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.
