Over the next four years, the EPA national waste prevention programme will work with individual Irish hotels to improve environmental management practices, prevent waste and encourage resource efficiency whilst reducing costs.

The EPA announced it will provide over Euro 1.6m to achieve the improvements during the environmental conference for the hotel and tourism sector.

It estimates that Irish hotels could save over Euro 80m per year by changing their environmental practices.

The EPA has set targets to recruit 150 of Ireland’s largest hotels in 2008.

From 2009 the project will be broadened to other sectors, such as restaurants, contract catering and hospitals under its Hotel and Hospitality Project.
