Scottish Water will build a new £8m development on the island of Seil, reports the Press and Journal.

The new plant is designed to connect the remaining 160 homes in the area to the public network so no wastewater will be discharged into Seil Sound.

Scottish Water said that the once the development is completed, the area of sea between the island and the mainland will be dramatically improved.

The company says it also means that the extra homes which will join the network will no longer need to use septic tanks.

Chris Toop, regional manager for Scottish Water, told the newspaper: “This is one of the biggest projects of its kind and we are confident that it will lead to a cleaner, fresher environment in a very beautiful corner of Argyll.”

The project will begin building work this week and is scheduled for completion in spring 2009.

Scottish Water has also been displaying its plans for the new Glencorse Water Treatment Works. The designs are on show for public consultation.
