MEP visits recycling centre

A recycling centre in Dundalk has received an official visit from MEP Mairead McGuinness, who is an avid recycler and is active on environmental issues in Brussels.

The V&W Recycling Centre, which has recycled over 50,000 tonnes of waste in the last six years, received Ms McGuinness, who was first elected to the European Parliament in 2004.

She praised the centre, which is one of the most successful in the country according to the Argus.

“This is the main centre I use for recycling. It’s a fantastic facility, as there is almost nothing you can’t take here,” she told the newspaper.

Veronica Martin, who owns the centre with Willie Martin, noted the changes in the type of waste the centre has received over the years.

“It’s no longer the case that people keep things like fridges and televisions for ten or fifteen years,” she said.

“Mobile phones are being changed every year or two, so there are a lot more electronic goods to be disposed of.”

Since the introduction of the waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive, manufacturers, importers and distributors of equipment have been tasked with ensuring their products are adequately disposed of.

Ms McGuiness also told the Argus that her family no longer uses a bin – recycling almost everything instead.
