Businesses not conscious of travel impact

A significant number of businesses remain unaware of the impact their corporate travel could have on the environment, experts report.

Ken McLeod, director of corporate at Advantage Business Travel Management, said that while some companies track CO2 emissions from business travel, the reality is that the majority of firms are not conscious of their level of environmental impact.

“If it comes to cost or saving CO2, whilst everyone would like to be mindful of that saving, the cost or service element of the product tends to outweigh being more environmentally friendly. It is trying to find the balance,” he said.

Research from the WWF indicates that if one in five business travellers in Europe used video conferencing rather than flying, 22m tonnes of carbon emissions could be saved each year, as well as serving to improve efficiency.

As result of the current economic climate, more European businesses are making cutbacks on corporate travel.
