Ontario invests in greening automotive industry

The provincial government of Ontario is investing millions in companies that are reducing the environmental impact of car manufacturing.

The automotive industry is one of the Canadian province’s key industries and is the target of its Next Generation of Jobs Fund, set up to encourage the development of a low-carbon economy in Ontario.

“The Ontario government’s strategy of helping companies invest in innovative technology is both helping the environment and creating valuable economic stimulus for a great community,” said Michael Bryant, Minister of Economic Development.

Supported schemes include investment of $2.4m in Axiom Industries for low-impact exhaust systems, $1.5m for Mitchell Plastics, a firm making solvent-free decorative trim for major manufacturers, $0.5m in PM Plastics for the manufacture of parts for hybrid vehicles and funding for Californian electric car manufacturers Better Place to set up shop in Toronto.

The investment will also help with job creation and retention

“The Ontario government is helping auto parts manufacturers invest in new technology, which in turn leads to new jobs,” said Mr Bryant.

“The Ontario government’s economic strategy is to support companies that are investing in innovative technology so Ontarians can have the jobs they want and the prosperity they deserve.”
