Senator welcomes companies’ meeting with energy boss

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has explained her pleasure at hearing ESB Independent Energy managing director Liam Molloy has agreed to meet with two of Ireland's major companies.

The aim of the meeting will be to discuss the dramatic rises in energy costs for Boston Scientific and Celestica, whose power bills have risen by euros 3 million and euros 500,000 since last October.

The Senator explained that Mr Molloy will advise the companies on how to cut their expenditure, helping to safeguard employment in the Galway area.

“Boston Scientific is a gold star employer of 3,200 people in Galway city,” she said.

“Celestica has been forced to seek 80 voluntary redundancies as a result of a loss of bidding power due to their increased electricity costs of euros 500,000.”

The Galway representative went on to explain the current situation was unsustainable and the companies have taken a positive step by arranging the meeting with the energy expert.

Ms Healy Eames is a member of the Fine Gael party, which is led by Edna Kenny.
