Climate change action plan created

The European Commission (EC) has drawn up a white paper detailing how it intends to assist member nations in coping with the effects of climate change.

While some hope that the major repercussions of environmental damage can be avoided, the EC has constructed a plan to prepare the continent for its effects.

The body pointed to new evidence that suggests the phenomenon could hit harder and faster than was originally predicted in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2007 report.

Only recently has the seriousness of the situation become apparent, according to Energy Commissioner Stavros Dimas, who added something must be done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“It is therefore essential that we start work now with governments, business, and communities to develop a comprehensive adaptation strategy for the European Union and to ensure that adaptation is integrated into key EU policies,” he explained.

Mr Dimas’ colleague Agriculture Commissioner Marjann Fischer Boel added agriculture could be the worst-affected area and the sector would have to prepare to protect itself.

It comes after the EC announced that euro 15m had been earmarked to promote green energy practices in cities.
