We’ll export clean energy – Sweden

As host to the make or break international talks on climate change in December, Sweden is keen to show its commitment to renewable energy.

Speaking on Global Wind Energy Day on Monday June 15 the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise & Energy said she sees Sweden as becoming an exporter of clean energy in the near future.

She said that wind lent itself well to Sweden’s geography and economy and could bring new jobs to sparsely populated rural areas.

“It will give us jobs in areas where we have a lack of jobs,” she said.

“I foresee that Sweden will export electricity, clean electricity because we have a good situation where we have a lot of hydropower, we have a lot of nuclear power, we are now investing heavily in wind power and we also have combined heat and power which is also a big industry.”

“Europe has a golden opportunity right now to go into a more eco-efficient economy.”

A straw poll of the Swedish public also demonstrated enthusiasm for wind power, with most keen to see Government backing for clean wind power.
