The Dutch Cabinet agreed the funding to clean up sites in a programme it is running over the next five years.
The cabinet says there are about 14,000 sites that have been identified by inspectors as contaminated around the country.
Most of the sites are inner city locations, around the entire country, where pollution from former industrial use such as petrol stations or factories were sited.
Of these about 1,800 are listed as a ‘priority’ and will be tackled first as they could pose a risk to people living or working nearby.
