The land in and around the Riverside and San Bernardino counties, located inland between Los Angeles and San Diego, are either former landfills or derelict public buildings which could be torn down.

Both counties are currently in talks with solar power firms after a bidding process that ended in April, so the final figures of the sales have yet to be agreed.

The US Department of the Interior pushed the move forward when it announced last month it was looking at the land largest for 24 ‘solar-energy study zones’.

According to the Government the power will be sold to electricity companies and communities across California, construction of the project is due to get underway next year.
