The camp is being put together in Blackheath, an area of open public grassland, on the border of Lewisham and Greenwich.

The organisers of Camp for Climate Action 2009 refused to reveal the final destination of many different groups of protesters who held smaller rallies at various locations in central London before heading to south east London.

Camper Tim French, said: “Environmental activists are increasingly being criminalised for our actions in the way that some communities experience on a daily basis.

“We are here today in solidarity with all those who have been affected by state violence.”
