Homes evacuated as Scotland hit by floods

Heavy rain has caused chaos across parts of Scotland with homes being evacuated and rivers reaching record heights across the country.

The worst of the rain hit last Thursday (3 September) forcing Moray Council to evacuated 50 homes in Fochabers.

Next morning the council was again forced to help more people flee their homes, this time in Elgin.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has said while it’s still raining in some areas the worst has passed.

Around Aberdeen SEPA had several reports of flooding from small streams and problems with surface water.

The Grange River, a tributary of the Deveron, recorded its highest level since records began in 1959 at 3.651m last Friday -the previous highest was 3.365m set in Nov 2007.

In Edinburgh the River Tyne in Haddington peaked just 0.3m under the top of the barrier in the Nungate area of the town

There was, however, still flooding reported with Lothian Council saying water got into basements in the area.

In Angus and Dundee the highest water levels recorded since they began, in 1969, was set on the Dighty Water at Balmossie in Dundee.

The levels set were about 0.3m higher than the previous record, which was set in April 1992.
