The first takes place this Tuesday, October 27, will look at how peatland may be covered by the UNFCCC Copenhagen agreement.
Prof Hans Joosten, head of the Mire and Palaeo Ecology Institute at Germany’s University of Griefswald, will deliver the first lecture For Peat’s Sake – Bogs and Climate Change.
Peatland degradation is a potential cause of climate change through the release of greenhouse gases. The lecture will present an overview of the latest developments in trying to reduce peatland degradation, both via the Climate Convention (UNFCCC) and the voluntary market (Voluntary Carbon Standard).
A second lecture, Back to the Future – The Role of Climate Science will be presented by Professor Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, Head of Climatology and Environmental Sciences, University Catholique de Louvain. This lecture will take place on Tuesday 24th November.
The occasional lectures are aimed at providing updates on the science of climate change as well as the policy and political response to this global challenge. Speakers include top international experts in science, economics and technology.
