Footwear chain trampled waste rules

A high street footwear chain has been hit with more than £30,000 in fines and court costs after admitting not sticking to waste regulations.

Brantano (UK), which has 147 outlets across the country, pleaded guilty to 15 charges related to not registering with the Environment Agency and failing to meet its packaging waste requirements between 2003 and 2007.

The company, based at Interlink Business Park, Bardon, in Coalville, made the admission at Coalville Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard the company dodged about £20,000 worth of fees by not following government regulations under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997, 2005 and 2007.

Under the regulations, companies who have an annual turnover of more than £2m and handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year must register with the Environment Agency or a recycling compliance scheme.

Brantano was fined £25,000 for the 15 charges, the company was also ordered to pay compensation of £4,022 and costs of £2,669.10, along with a £15 victim surcharge – a total of £31,706.10.
