The RecycleBank scheme, which has been a success in America, made its UK debut five months ago in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Terry Gould, from the council, spoke at London Remade’s Resource efficiency: Driving change.

He said recycling rates since the scheme came had gone up by between ’30 and 35%’.

And of the 3725 houses invited to join the scheme 62% had activated their account.

Feedback on the scheme had also been positive with 91% of those who responded to a council survey saying they ‘found it easy’.

Result from a second pilot scheme in Halton, in north west England, are due to be announced next week.
