Councillors dump nuclear waste plan

Councillors have dumped plans to landfill nuclear waste in what could be a big blow to Government plans to increase the country's nuclear generation capacity.

The plans, by waste firm Augean, were snubbed by Northamptonshire County Council.

The plans would have seen ‘small amounts’ of radioactive waste going to the firm’s existing hazardous landfill facility in East Northamptonshire.

However, the County’s development control committee this week (March 16) went against the advice of officers to reject the scheme.

A spokesman for Augean said: “We will now be considering how best to take these important proposals forward.”
