South East likely to escape hosepipe ban

Unlike United Utilities, which is on the verge of applying for a hosepipe ban, Thames water has dismissed all talk on the subject.

A spokesman for the firm on Friday (July 2) said: “Over the last year the Thames Water region, London and the Thames Valley, has had 99% of its long-term average rainfall. Reservoirs are currently full and groundwater levels are healthy.

“Since the 2006 drought we’ve invested many millions of pounds replacing worn-out Victorian pipes in London.

“As a result, we’ve cut leakage by 27% in the last five years, hitting Ofwat’s annual target for the past four.

“This has provided greater resilience against a possible drought. And if the situation changes, we’ve just opened the UK’s first large-scale desalination plant in east London, which can significantly boost supplies when required.”
