The explosion in the San Francisco Bay area happened last night (September 9) when the pipeline owned by utility firm Pacific Gas and Electric exploded in a residential area.

One person has been reported killed and several more have been taken to hospital with severe injuries.

Up to 50 houses may have been completely destroyed and an a further 100 are reported to be damaged by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Pacific Gas and Electric said it would ‘take accountability’ if it was found to be responsible for the explosion

In a statement the firm said: “Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the tragic explosion and fire in San Bruno.

“The priority right now is to help make the area safe. We have crews on the scene and are working with emergency officials.”
