The landfill in Kerdiffstown near Nas in Ireland caught fire two weeks ago and is still burning.

Residents living nearby to the site have been ordered to stay inside, while the authorities have issued warnings for to the elderly and young children to keep well away from the site.

Firefighters have this week said they have brought the fire under control and reduced smoke levels in the area.

However, even though the fire is under control, it is not likely to be fully put out for another two weeks.

During the next fortnight an estimated 40,000 cubic metres of waste material will have to be brought down to a safe temperature to make sure there is no threat of a further flare-up.

A spokesman for Ireland environmental watchdog the Environmental Protection Agency said: “Some smoke is still coming from the fire.

“Health authorities are maintaining their advice that people should avoid any smoke plume and stay inside, with windows and doors shut, whenever it is passing over their houses or other premises.

“Some people may be sensitive to the effects of smoke. Those with existing respiratory or cardiac problems, young children and the elderly may experience symptoms.

“The HSE has advised that people with symptoms should reduce their level of activity, take medications as prescribed and consult their doctor.”
