Sutton United first football club to up its game in reducing emissions

Sutton United Football Club is going green for the start of the new season by becoming the first football team in the world to measure and reduce its carbon emissions according to a recognised standard.

After being promoted to the Blue Square Bet South League (Conference South) last season, Sutton United is looking to up its game both on and off the pitch by becoming Planet Positive certified. The certification will assess the electricity and gas consumption at the club’s ground.

To kick things off, Sutton United will aim to reduce its impact on the environment through a simple behaviour change plan. Players and staff will be encouraged to adopt greener lifestyles that benefit the environment and the club.

Fans who are interested will also be offered information on how to cut carbon emissions at home in ways that can also save money.

Sutton United’s company secretary, Dave Farebrother, said: “With a strong community development plan already in place, Planet Positive certification represents the next step in our progress off the pitch.

“We realise the importance of reducing our impact and providing our fans with a commitment which they can follow, Planet Positive certification will provide evidence for this and we look forward to our involvement with them.”

The Planet Positive mark is granted to organisations that undertake a four-step process to manage their environmental footprint: to measure and reduce carbon emissions; to invest in a community sustainability project and to communicate their carbon footprint, reduction targets and environmental actions. .
