In what is believed to be the first of its kind in Wales, Newport-based Footprint Matters 2U has launched a fill-and-collect box scheme for unwanted or broken products such as computers, TVs, batteries and white goods.

Each 1 cubic metre box can hold up to 500kg of electronic items. Once full, the box is collected and all waste recovered through recycling or reuse. If companies sign up to a 12-month contract, they can have unlimited collections.

Footprint Matters 2U’s managing director, Tim Hourahine, said: “On its own, a computer monitor would cost a typical business an average of £5 to cover transport, and disposal. This soon adds up over a year so we aim to help businesses save at least 50% on their electrical waste costs and in most cases even more.”

He added: “Through this scheme we aim to collect 150 tonnes of electrical waste in the first three months and up to 1,200 tonnes per year.”

Last year, Footprint Matters 2U received funding from WRAP Cymru to help improve collection services for Welsh businesses. Beth Winkley, who heads the Welsh programme up, said: ” At WRAP, our mission is to create a market for recycled materials and encouraging businesses to use recycled content in their products, processes and packaging.
