McDonald’s leads fight against litter in Scotland

McDonald's has pledged to tackle litter in Glasgow by lending its support to a scheme which is encouraging businesses to sign up to a major clean-up campaign.

The initiative – National Spring Clean 2012 – is being headed up by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and will run for two months, between April and May 2012.

Last year, nearly 100,000 Scots joined in to help clear up more than 1,000 tonnes of litter including every Scottish McDonald’s store, which organised staff teams to help out.

Keep Scotland Beautiful’s chief executive, Derek Robertson, said: “Most businesses now have a corporate social responsibility policy, and by taking part, they will go some way to achieving their goals.”

He added: “Keep Scotland Beautiful is delighted to be working with McDonald’s, Greggs and a number of local Scottish businesses and encourage more businesses to follow their example.”

McDonald’s UK’s vice president, Jez Langhorn, said: “The amount of litter people drop on our streets is unacceptable and continues to cause frustration in communities across Scotland.

“At McDonald’s, we want to be responsible members of the communities in which we operate. For 20 years we have been sending out daily litter patrols and organising larger ‘clean up’ events, often working in partnership with local residents and community groups.
