The South West Wales Materials Efficiency project, led by Pembrokeshire County Council in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council, will look to divert wast from landfill and create up to 13 jobs in the process.

Pembrokeshire will benefit from a kerbside glass collection service, a new civic amenity recycling site and a reuse centre for bulky household items. In Carmarthenshire, an ‘adopt a recycling site’ scheme will be set up and run by community groups who will manage eight recycling and composting sites.

In addition, up to 20 new bring sites will be developed to increase the ability of householders and local businesses to recycle, especially where there is no kerbside collection.

Welsh Environment Minister John Griffiths said: “New services such as this one will be key in helping us to keep driving up our recycling rates to the levels that Wales needs.”

Cllr Ken Rowlands from Pembrokeshire County Council also welcomed the initiative. “Our orange bag, food waste and garden waste kerbside collection schemes have been enthusiastically embraced by residents, and these new projects will help recycling and reusing to become a way of life in the county.”
