Food service sector braced for waste prevention drive

Caterers and food service operators will be expected to commit to reducing food and packaging waste under a new producer responsibility deal this May.

The Government has confirmed its intention to launch the voluntary code of practice for the hospitality and food service sector, aimed at preventing waste and boosting recovery levels through anaerobic digestion or composting.

Companies who sign up to the code will be expected to report on their waste arisings and waste management practices to meet specific targets. WRAP will co-ordinate the agreement and offer support to the signatories.

The deal will cover both the cost sector, through contract caterers and procurement, and the profit sector.
