In brief: energy-from-waste contract news

Viridor reaches a milestone in the construction of its latest energy-from-waste (EfW) facility, while Waste Recycling Group gets the green light for energy recovery in Buckinghamshire.

Excavation works of the 7,200m3 waste bunker for Viridor’s EfW facility in Ardley, north Oxfordshire, are now complete. Once the facility is operational, it will provide storage for up to 5,000 tonnes of residual waste.

The project is a partnership between Viridor, Oxfordshire County Council and construction consortium CNIM-Clugston Oxfordshire.

Once construction is complete, the facility will have capacity to process 300,000 tonnes of waste and generate up to 24MW of renewable electricity for the National Grid.

Meanwhile Waste Recycling Group (WRG) has won planning approval from Buckinghamshire County Council for a similar-sized EfW facility in the region.

The plant forms part of an integrated waste management solution for Buckinghamshire that will save the council around £100m during the life of the 30-year contract.

With a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per annum, the facility will generate 22MW of electricity and is expected to take three years to build.

WRG was appointed Buckinghamshire County Council’s preferred bidder for its residual waste treatment contract in November 2010.
