Biosolids monitoring offer for Severn Trent farmers

An environmental monitoring process has been introduced by Severn Trent Water to help farmers apply biosolids to their land to achieve maximum productivity.

The key focus of the process is to help farmers identify suitable sites for the application of biosolids through the use of detailed soil analysis, identifying which elements are already contained within field soils and assessing what level of biosolids will add to output.

A five-year sampling and analysis contract has been awarded by Severn Trent Water to the environmental sampling firm, enitial, whose business development director, Ivor Parry, said the use of biosolids on agricultural land offered huge benefits for farmers and could significantly increase production and yields.

Biosolids are playing an increasingly important role in land regeneration and agricultural improvement with recent improvements in production methods helping to make them a high quality, cost effective alternative to traditional fertilisers.

Severn Trent Water’s Tony Martindale said the new process would be carried out in full compliance with the agricultural industry’s code of practice with soil samples being sent to the National Laboratory Service for analysis. This would make the application of biosolids to assessed land entirely results based.
