Shredding firm gets environmental stamp of approval

PHS Datashred, a national paper and IT shredding business, has reduced its fuel usage by nearly 25% in the past three years - 20% beyond its original target.

The company has been awarded the British Standards Institution’s 14001:2004 accreditation for its commitment to reducing environmental impact.

The international award also recognised Datashred’s 5% reduction in waste sent to landfill and 5% reduction in energy consumption.

Based on a fleet size of 132 commercial vehicles, Datashred claim their fuel saving measures will save them £400,000 a year.

Datashred , which has customers in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Belgium and Spain, has implemented a variety of measures to cut fuel including introducing an ‘in-cab’ driver profiling system which it claims achieved a 10.6% improvement in miles per gallon over the last three years.

The company also geographically realigned its workload in 2011 which cut fuel bills by 5% and implemented a route optimisation programme achieving a further 11.34% fuel reduction.

In the future, Datashred aims to investigate methods of using more recyclable material in the construction of its vehicles and hopes to introduce Hydraulic oil recycling so it can reuse the 10,000 litres of oil it changes every year.
