BT is one of the UK’s top-10 electricity consumers, using approximately 0.7% of the UK’s total consumption, and is currently one of country’s largest purchasers of green electricity.

The agreement means that RES will now take responsibility for producing a full planning application.

Initial scoping has begun and details about the size and layout of the development will be made available to the local community as part of a comprehensive public consultation.

Both companies had previously identified the site, situated approximately 10km North West of Morpeth, as being suitable for a wind farm development.

BT intends to produce 250 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity by 2016, equivalent to around 25% of the company’s current needs.
