EXCLUSIVE: Easy access to personal impact data will drive a green economy

Having access to information about our own environmental impact is vital to revolutionising the economy and encouraging greener choices, says TUI's group environment manager James Whittingham.

Speaking to edie, Whittingham says this will help people make a difference to the way they “conduct their lives and their lifestyle”.

“It will make them think a little more about activities and actions, that we’re all in this together and it’s not necessarily just left to industry, business or Government to green the economy,” says Whittingham.

Focusing on the popularity of the smartphone, Whittingham highlighted the importance of having access to information through the use of smartphone apps.

“We all have a collective responsibility, and there may be Apps that can actually tell you these are the key things that you’re already doing and these are the little tweaks or checks and balances you can make to reduce your environmental impact,” he added.

However, the mass up-take in smartphones and mobile devices is also having a negative effect on the environment.

A recent report found that due to the increasing use of mobile data the digital economy is now approaching a tenth of the world’s electricity use. This can be largely due to the energy intensity of smartphones using mobile data
