Sustainability stats: The week in numbers (3/04/15)

This week's news is all green: green energy and green walls. And the odd chocolate egg - or 90 million the UK will consume this weekend - thrown in because it is Easter.

Renewable news has been front and centre this week with records broken on both the generation side and in capacity installation. The generation record for wind power was broken again following a particularly stormy Tuesday night. Wind provided 209GWh of energy, just beating the previous record set back in December.

2014 was a record year for renewable capacity installation, with 103GW brought online. Despite wind capacity continuing to increase in Scotland, 79% of Scottish adults want the next Government to continue the development of renewables. However it’s not all good news. The Solar Trade Association expects solar installations to drop by 80% following the end of subsidies for large-scale solar this week.

Lastly in renewable news the Green Investment Bank announced the world’s first offshore-wind fund of £463m to help mobilise investment in the sector.

In another type of green news retailer Marks and Spencer has unveiled its latest ‘eco-store’ in Newcastle, fronted by a 167m green wall featuring 16,000 plants, part of M&S’ Plan A initiative to become the world’s most sustainable retailer.
