REA chief executive joins new-look Transport for London board

The chief executive of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) Dr Nina Skorupska hopes to bring her expertise on renewable energy to a smaller and more diverse Transport for London (TfL), after being named on the Board of Governors.

With more than 25 years of experience in the energy sector working in high-profile roles at RWE, DNV GL Energy and the REA, Skorupska has been appointed to the Board of Governors as part of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s new vision for TfL.

“I am deeply excited by this appointment,” Skorupska said. “I have spent the past three years immersed in the changing world of energy, where the transition to a low-carbon, accessible, and affordable energy system is in full swing. To have a seat at such a diverse, intelligent, and accomplished table is a humbling thing, and I hope my knowledge and experience will be of value in these turbulent times of change and opportunity.”

The Mayor of London confirmed that the TfL has been reduced from 17 individuals to 15. In the previous regime, just four women sat on the board, but the new appointments will see women make up 57% of TfL’s board.

Both Bloomberg New Energy Finance founder Michael Liebriech and Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson have signed on to the board for a further two years.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I promised to reshape TfL’s Board and make it reflect London’s diversity, and that’s exactly what I’ve done. I’m delighted to be able to announce a Board that brings together a huge range of talent, experiences and backgrounds, while being more efficient. There are still not enough women in senior positions across London, and I’m proud that we have brought gender parity to the TfL board and increased BAME and disability representation. Together we will ensure that TfL delivers the world-class transport system that Londoners deserve.”

Call to action

As well as bringing her expertise on how the UK can decarbonise its transport industries through the use of renewables, Skorupska will also bring a forward-thinking attitude that aims to accelerate the UK’s low-carbon ambitions.

In edie’s recent green economy wishlist, Skorupska called on the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to “transpose” all energy policies from the European Union (EU) into UK law as part of a post-Brexit strategy.

Skorupska has also called on the UK Government to reinvigorate a “languished” carbon budget, which she believes fails to reflect the ambition of the commitments made by the UK at the Paris climate talks.
