Enel and Hewlett Packard Enterprise join CE100 to accelerate closed-loop transition

HPE helps its customers understand how participation in its end-of-life programmes can address the social and environmental impacts of IT transformation

Enel and HPE are using the CE100 platform to open-up collaborative opportunities with companies and organisations which are actively seeking and developing closed-loop models. The firms join the likes of Coca-Cola, Unilever and Apple in signing up to the initiative.

Global technology company HPE has set a target to increase the energy performance of its product portfolio 30 times by 2030, and purposely design for easy customer repair, upgrade or reuse. As part of its circular strategy, HPE has developed a Circular Economy report which helps customers understand how participation in its end-of-life programmes can address the social and environmental impacts of IT transformation.

Multinational energy firm Enel has set a zero-emission target for 2050, to be reached by gaining capacity from renewables and circular decommissioning of thermal plants. Enel is also focusing on smart grids, circular cities and circularity applied to its own operations as well as suppliers and customers.

Wheels in motion

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimates that Europe could create a net-benefit of €1.8bn (£1.59bn) by 2030 by adopting circular economy principles.

The circular economy concept received a boost last week when major companies from across the plastics value chain, including Procter & Gamble (P&G), Veolia and ExxonMobil, last committed more than $1bn (£777m) as part of a new alliance aimed at eliminating plastic waste in the environment. The alliance will use the $1bn in committed funding to scale solutions that minimise the amount of plastic in the environment by utilising closed-loop solutions.
