edie’s guides to net-zero carbon continues with the public sector

Town halls such as Birmingham (pictured) will be taking drastic action as they accelerate their journeys to net-zero with the climate emergency.

Following the launch of edie’s net-zero guides on the utilities, manufacturing, food & drinks manufacturing and construction sectors, edie has now launched the fifth of its insight reports, which investigates how the public sector is scaling up its decarbonisation ambitions.

Published today (29 January), the 18-page report breaks down exactly how sustainability and energy professionals working for public sector bodies can drive the low-carbon transition – from agreeing and setting targets to scaling up solutions and delivering goals across local and central government and arms-length organisations.

The report, supported by Total Gas and Power, follows the UK’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and the increasing focus on zero carbon which will see entire sectors’ processes and footprints radically altered, and shift industry away from a resource-intensive and fossil fuel reliant existence.

It includes insight into public sector net-zero ambitions and target setting and showcases how the sector can accelerate its overall targets. There is also a one-page infographic highlighting the key figures and statistics from the sector, providing a quick overview of where the public sector currently sits in the overall net-zero movement – and what the targets are for the future.

Writing in the viewpoint of the report, Total’s director, Major Business, Mark Rose said: “Protests against global warming are becoming increasingly common and this environment is prompting us to transform ourselves even more quickly in order to reduce the carbon intensity of our energy mix.”

“We are the leading energy supplier to the UK’s public sector, having seven Framework Agreements awarded by five Public Buying Organisations, who between them will represent 93,000 sites. Accordingly, we play a crucial role helping the public sector meet the net zero goal.”

This new series of reports is inspired by Mission Possible – edie’s award-winning, purpose-driven campaign which is empowering businesses to ramp up efforts across all areas of sustainable development.

The full series will consist of seven reports, with later editions exploring what ‘net-zero’ looks like for construction, food and drink, hospitality & leisure, manufacturing, the public sector, retail and utilities.
