For this episode, senior reporter Sarah George sits down with content editor Matt Mace to provide an overview of gender issues in the sustainability, CSR and energy sectors.

They discuss the key takeaways from the biennial Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) Salary Survey 2018, as well as research from Policy Exchange and Students Organising for Sustainability.

Then, Sarah interviews JLL UK’s head of sustainability Sophie Walker to find out more about her 12+ year in sustainability. Sophie notably sits on JLL UK’s board and plays a key role in delivering against its 2030 net-zero and 2020 renewable energy goals.

Following that, Matt catches up with Hilton’s energy and compliance manager for the EMEA region, Ashley O’Neill. Ashley offers her thoughts on the skills pipeline for women in engineering, and outlines her key asks for businesses looking to overcome barriers and foster opportunities here. She also makes reference to the Playbook for Sustainability and Energy Professionals – a resource she co-created with the rest of edie’s 30 Under 30 Class of 2019. This free-to-download document provides practical advice on how sustainability and energy professionals can embody ‘excellence’ in 2020

Later, we hear from Emily Penn, co-founder of eXXpedition – a community interest company carrying out all-women voyages exploring the global impact of ocean plastic pollution. Emily outlines how she came to be in her current position -a far cry from her studies in architecture – and provides advice for supporting women in STEM.

Finally, Dr Abigail Stevenson, Director at the Mars Global Food Safety Center (GFSC), dials in to offer her views on women in science and STEM careers.
