The Rwandan capital Kigali has installed its first public bins as part of an ongoing effort to keep the city litter free.

In 2004 the state promoted a national litter-picking day and many people were given the day off work to clear plastic bags and other detritus from the streets of towns and cities.

Around 1,000 bins have now been installed in the city, which has a reputation for being noticeably cleaner than many other African cities.
