Lincolnshire County Council has launched the action against Sainsbury’s after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.
The action, by the council’s trading standards team, was started over a joint of beef which is itself wrapped in tight plastic as well as being in a plastic box with cardboard instructions around it.
The action was announced last Friday (September 17) came on the same day the supermarket chain announced it was scrapping boxes for its basics cereal.
In a statement Sainsbury’s said it was ‘surprised’ by the action and thought it had had good talks with the council over the issue.
Sainsbury’s also said it will move its basics cereal over to bags rather than boxes after a successful trial with one part of the range.
The chain believes using bags rather than boxes for these cereals means 165 tonnes of packaging will be kept off Sainsbury’s shelves every year.
That’s the same weight as 4.1 million slices of toast, 165,000 litres of orange juice or 4 million croissants.
