Scenting the air for innovation

A wide array of air monitoring products and services awaits visitors to the em-certs exhibition at Bretby Conference Centre. IEM reports on the highlights


Em-certs 2004 will take place at Bretby Conference Centre, Burton-Upon-Trent on 25 & 26 February. The event will encompass a conference, an exhibition and a series of walk-in workshops, all centered around the measurement of emissions to air. Topics such as the Environment Agency’s MCERTS scheme, as well as new European CEN legislation will be discussed, along with new technology and training to help industry demonstrate compliance as part of its overall environmental programme.

This year’s event follows on from the first em-certs, which took place in November 2002. Inspired by the need for clarity and understanding in the face of intense change, the first show created a theme of information-sharing which this year’s event looks set to continue. Enviro Technology Services will launch a new low cost, high reliability Opsis CEM System for power plant operators at em-certs 2004. Designated CP100, this dilution extraction system combines proven chemiluminescence and UV fluorescent monitoring techniques with an ultra low maintenance sampling system to measure SO2 and NOx with further options for NO2, O3, CO and CO2.

The company will also be featuring the Opsis System 400 Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) cross-duct system that measures up to six monitoring paths using non-contact, in-situ technology. In addition to this, information will be available on Enviro Technology’s CEMS training courses that cover MCERTS examination levels one and two and Technical Endorsements one, three and four as well as quality assurance of Automated Measuring Systems and information on the forthcoming CEMS standard prEN14181.

Particulate monitoring

Air Monitors will be showing a wide range of particulate monitoring technology for use in both ambient and emissions applications.
The TEOM has been popular with ambient monitoring experts for some time, and with the addition of the new FDMS unit is able to more accurately measure true airborne PM concentrations without the need for calibration factors. The TEOM/FDMS is the only commercially available PM monitor to give information in near real time on the volatile and non-volatile fractions of airborne PM at costs much less than for equivalent gravimetric samplers.

AES is one of the UK’s largest environmental monitoring companies and provides an MCERTS qualified, UKAS accredited service for the sampling and analysis of air emissions.
A number of experienced air quality scientists will be on hand at em-certs to offer expert advice on emissions monitoring issues. Delegates will also be able to find out more about AES’ other IPPC monitoring services for ambient air, odour, noise, contaminated land, groundwater and effluent monitoring. The company’s new acoustics and vibration consultancy services and occupational hygiene services will also be showcased.

Eco-Scientific will be exhibiting a range of Gas Standards Generators, providing traceable gas standards for over 400 compounds.
Products will include the new Kin-Tek Span Pac, plus a range of permeation tubes and other accessories, used for making gas standards. This new range of instruments is designed for the European market and has many new options. All Kin-Tek products are Traceable to NIST in the USA and they are also checked, using UKAS traceable equipment. The company also plans to display a range of gas analysers for detecting a wide range of compounds including formaldehyde.

MCERTS-approved

A range of MCERTS approved equipment will be exhibited by Land Instruments International at the em-certs event. The company will be showing the FGA continuous emissions monitoring system, 4500 Series dust monitors and the Lancom III portable gas analyser.
The recent MCERTS approval for FGA further demonstrates that Advanced Dual Sensor Technology (ADST) is a high performance measurement technique for continuous emissions monitoring.

Quantitech will be displaying a fully integrated FTIR-based CEM system, and its FTIR specialist from Helsinki-based supplier Temet Oy will be on hand to deal with applications queries. Also on show, and presented at the conference, will be a novel Isostack sampling system from TCR-Tecora that combines isokinetic sampling conditions for particulates with simultaneous side stream sampling for other gaseous pollutants.

Casella ETi, part of the rapidly expanding Casella Group of companies, will be featuring its new comprehensive range of portable and fixed mercury analysers, including applications for research, process control and emissions monitoring. The company is also previewing the Amesa continuous dioxin sampling system and the new range of NEO lasergas 2 instruments.

Producer of specialty gases for high technology markets, Spectra Gases, will be exhibiting its mercury reference gas at em-certs 2004 in conjunction with the Lumex mercury analyser distributed in the UK by Spectronics.
Spectra Gases also offers EN12619 calibration gas standards in a range of cylinder sizes and can provide details at the booth. The company can also answer questions on any other gas mixture requirements.
